Learning Japanese

Today I had my first Japanese lesson. I think I picked the right level, at least as far as the speaking/listening bit is concerned. Probably the reading/writing part will be a bit too easy for me, but I don't think I could've gone a level higher either. The teacher was nice, but apparently we'll have a different teacher depending on the weekday (since the class is three days per week, that means three teachers). This was the "Friday" teacher. There's quite a large number of students in the class, no one I know though. I do hope they'll pick up the pace a little; today was very slow.

The classes are at the Hongo campus, and I also had to pick up some papers from the office of the faculty of Engineering while I was there. Since I had to wait until the office opened, I had some time to kill which I used to take some pictures. Hongo is simply huge; it takes more than five minutes walking to get from one side to the other.

There's also a few pictures from Shinjuku which I took on Wednesday.

I am learning Japanese and have Windows Mobile 5 on my pda cell phone. I wanted to let you know that I successfully installed the vista Meiryo font on my phone along with the PocketDictionary and the Input Panel.

I noticed though, that Word Mobile does not recognize the characters? Is there something I have to do to make it work?

Hi Charles, thanks for using Pocket Dictionary and Japanese Input.
The only thing you need to do to get Word Mobile to accept the characters is set the font. You can do this using Menu/Format/Font.

It is very difficult for me to diagnose the problem from that information, especially since I don't have a WM6 smartphone to try it on.

Hi Avin, after doing some research this appears to be a limitation of the .Net Compact Framework on smart phones. Since this is not trivial for me to work around for now I'll have to disappoint you by saying smart phones are not supported.
Sorry!

Hi, I use an iPaq HX2415 with WM 2003 SE. Before the format, I think version 1 used to run fine. Now with 1.1 and after a fresh format, I get the following error after the "radical-based kanji lookup" setup screen. I already installed the .Net Compact Framework and I still have a couple of megabytes still available (6-7MB).

PocketDictionary.exe
Win32Exception

at System.Windows.Forms.Form._SetVisibleNotify()
at System.Windows.Forms.Control.set_Visible()
at System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run()
at PocketDictionary.MainForm.Main()

Thank you in advance! Sorry for the trouble.

Hi Allen,
I'm sorry, I seem to have inadvertently broken WM2003 support in version 1.1.
Until I can get it fixed, I suggest you continue to use 1.0, which you can download directly from here: http://www.ookii.org/software/pocketdictionary/download/pocketdictionary.cab
