僕は東大生です

Earlier, I wrote about how I'm trying to get the Monbukagasho (MEXT) Scholarship to go to Japan for two years.

As I briefly mentioned in that post, the next step in the process was to get admission to the University of Tokyo. After all, what's the point in getting a research scholarship if I don't have a university to go to?

Yesterday, I received an e-mail from the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Office of International Relations, saying that my application has been processed and I have been accepted! All that's left now, if my understanding is correct, is to get final approval for the scholarship from Monbukagakusho itself in Japan, meaning that I'm actually starting to believe I could really get it.

So, as the title of this post says (for those who can't read Japanese), "boku ha toudai-sei desu", I'm a Tokyo U student!

heey.. I'm probably gonna live in japan too.. im still learning hiragana and katakhana or something.. but I heard about this kanji you have learn if you wanna go to a university.. and i was just wondering do ya have to know the 'on' or the 'kun' kanji? On was for Chinese .. that's what I heard, but in a Japanese movie I heard some on kanji stuff or something.. So I am really confused now .. so would you please mail me? .. i'd be very pleased

Hi Moeska,

I spent all of last year at a Japanese language school in Fukuoka, so I'll give you some advice.

In order to effectively function in Japanese society, you need to know about 2000 kanji. Most kanji have both a kun and an on reading. The kun reading is the native Japanese reading, and is used chiefly in words of Japanese origin. The on reading is the Chinese reading, and is an approximation of the Chinese reading of the Kanji at the time it was assimilated into Japanese usage. Many kanji have more than one on reading, and which one you must use depends upon the context. On readings are used extensively in kanji combinations and are widely used in everyday life due to the prevalence of words borrowed from Chinese in the Japanese language. The word for dinner (bangohan) is an example of such a word, and there are many thousands more. Every second word will be based upon the on-reading of a kanji. Therefore, you must endeavour to learn all the readings of every kanji, taking special care to remember which is the kun reading and which is the on reading (because if you don't, you might read a kanji with the kun reading when you know to read it with the on reading and vice versa).

In terms of learning the Japanese language, I would estimate that two years of reasonably hard work will have you at a good standard. You will certainly be able to get by with less, but don't expect to understand much of what you see on TV for a year or two.

Get in touch with the university you wish to attend in order to find out their language requirements - some run special programs for international students, and some teach classes in English.

Hi there!

Could you tell us more about your acceptance into Tokyo University? What qualifications did you present for your admission as an internation student? I know the competition is tough but I think you have a better picture.

Thanks!
